Frequently asked

questions

  • Are there age or illness restrictions for donation?
    • There are no strict age limits for donation. Medical professionals evaluate each potential donor on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility for organ, eye and tissue donation.
  • Are there fees or other expenses for donation?
    • There are no costs to the donor or their family for organ, eye and tissue donation. The recovery agency covers all expenses related to the donation process.
  • Who should I inform of my decision in advance?
    • It’s crucial to discuss your donation decision with your family, doctor, and other healthcare providers. It is also important to register as an organ, eye, and tissue donor on our website.
  • Who makes the arrangements?
    • The recovery agency coordinates the donation process, including transportation and necessary medical procedures. The family is responsible for funeral arrangements.
  • How and to where/whom is the body transported?
    • After a person passes, their body is typically transported to a medical examiner’s office or funeral home. If that individual is a donor, they might also be transported to facilitate the recovery surgery in a hospital. Normal coroner/funeral transport costs are paid for by the family.
  • Is the donor returned to the family when the donation process is completed?
    • After the donation process is complete, the remains are returned for final arrangements. The family can choose burial or cremation according to their preferences or cultural traditions.

One organ donor can save as many as eight lives. One tissue donor can improve the lives of 75 or more people.
