Sierra Donor Services Honors Organ, Eye and Tissue Donor Heroes at “Locks of Legacy” Remembrance Event

On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Sierra Donor Services (SDS), the leading nonprofit organ procurement organization serving Northern California, hosted its annual Locks of Legacy event. Donor families, transplant recipients, and grief specialists united during a remembrance ceremony honoring those who gave the gift of life through organ, eye and tissue donation.
The event was held at the University Union Ballroom at California State University, Sacramento, where over 300 families attended, reminding everyone of the lasting impact donor heroes have on the lives of others. Families had an opportunity to share photos and messages of remembrance and received an engraved lock bearing the names of their loved ones.
Locks of Legacy exemplifies Sierra Donor Services’ ongoing mission to honor donors, support their families, and inspire future acts of donation. One organ donor can save up to eight lives and enhance the lives of 75 more through tissue and cornea donation. Every new registration brings hope to patients awaiting a transplant and comfort to families who choose to become a registered donor.

“The doctors told me my son, Malachi, was having heart failure. This was the beginning of our five-month journey going through a life-changing situation,” said Shawntay Gorman McBrewer, mother of heart transplant recipient Malachi McBrewer. “When he was given a second chance at life, we were filled with gratitude and want to thank those who made the ultimate decision to say yes to organ donation.”
