Sierra Donor Services Engages Sacramento’s Asian American Community for Lunar New Year at Arden Fair Mall

February 4, 2025

In partnership with the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce, Sierra Donor Services (SDS) participated in the vibrant Lunar New Year celebration at Arden Fair Mall on Saturday.

SDS staff Kyla Aquino Irving and Yee Moua were on hand throughout the event, engaging with community members and distributing festive red “Year of the Snake” themed gift boxes. These boxes contained a fortune cookie and information about organ, eye, and tissue donation, raising awareness about health disparities in the Asian Pacific community with a nod to Asian American culture.

The crowd was captivated by Teng Fei Lion Dance’s colorful costumes and coordinated acrobatics. Honor Kung Fu Academy showcased their young students’ agility and weaponry skills, and the Iu Mien Community’s folk dancers performed in radiant traditional attire.

In California, Asian Americans comprise 19% of the organ transplant waiting list, with over 3,800 individuals in need of a lifesaving organ. Despite their significant presence in the healthcare workforce, many Asian Americans experience organ failure and historically have not become organ and tissue donors.
